Fry’s Vegetarian Foods joins Guiness Record Attempt for Longest Braai

An attempt to beat the current Guinness World Book of Record for the longest braai is being staged at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town on the 16 and 17 September. The current record, which stands at 28 hours and 26 minutes, will be challenged by one man who will have to braai five different items at any one time for the duration of the record breaking attempt, one of which will be a Fry’s Vegetarian product.

Jan Scannell, better known as Jan Braai, conceptualized National Braai Day four years ago to promote National Heritage Day on the 24 September. His World Record attempt, a not-for-profit event, takes place a week before National Braai Day this year.veg braai

Fry’s Vegetarian Foods bear a close resemblance to meat in terms of taste, appearance, texture and nutrition, making them an excellent protein replacement for meat, and an ideal vegetarian option for the braai.

One of the rules of this record breaking attempt is that all the food must be eaten. Sponsors, guests, and the public are urged to support Jan and can enjoy the delicious food continually being prepared, by purchasing a wristband for R 10.00, with all the proceeds going to charity.
“We are excited to be playing a role in this record breaking attempt, and want to use this opportunity to urge all South Africans to realize that healthy vegetarian products can be a delicious and versatile option for the braai,” says Tammy Fry, Marketing Director of Fry’s Vegetarian Foods.

South African’s gathering around fires is the central theme of National Braai Day. It has grown in popularity and support over the years and is endorsed by Emeritus Archbishop Doctor Desmond Tutu.

Jan will start the braai at 08H00 on Thursday 16 September and is expected to continue until the afternoon of Friday 17 September, determined to break the 28 hours and 26 minutes record. A Guinness World Record Adjudicator from London will be present at the event and will declare the record official.
